Are you up for it?
- Changing career is hard
- I’m getting too old to change
- I don’t have the skills / confidence to change
- It is better to play safe and stay in my job
Do these ideas sound familiar?
Let me check with you then, are they ideas that have become ‘cemented in’ because you have rehearsed them many times and because you have heard others (who are usually also stuck in a job) say much the same?
Are you just following ‘received wisdom’ and refusing to consider that there might be other ways of viewing your situation?
Is your story beginning to sound like the one I have just been reading about in The Big Cholesterol Con by Dr Malcolm Kendrick where many doctors are automatically prescribing statins to lower cholesterol without considering the evidence against the established idea that cholesterol is bad?
Taking the soft option?
It is only too easy to hear the evidence that supports your belief. It’s kind of comforting to reassure yourself that you are ‘right’. But what if that ‘right’ is really wrong?
What if you were to start looking for the evidence that counters the idea about career change you have fixed on to. The idea that is holding you back. What if you began seeking out people who have changed direction and made big changes in their lives.
They really do exist.
In case you don’t believe it, here are a few examples
I recently had an email from a long time subscriber to the 5 Minute Career Coach. This is what she said:
It’s still very much an evolving journey for me. It’s been 9 months that sometimes felt like a century, and over 5 years in the making. But you know what? It’s all so worth it!
Thanks for your emails, and the work you do. It’s certainly helped me.”
And take a look at the Career Change Success Stories on the How To Change Careers website. Here are a few to get you started.
It only needs one piece of contrary evidence to prove an idea wrong. If just one person has succeeded in changing career and being happier as a result, then it shows that it truly is possible.
And the next success story on my website could be yours.
I look forward to reading it soon!
