You know one of the things that really struck me when I was at Presentation Secrets was the number of people there who I already knew.
I had already connected with them in one way or another – through networking & training events, business meetings, even via Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.
This has got to be one of the best things that has happened since switching from being employed to self employed. Maybe this will surprise you, but I am actually much more widely connected now than when I was in a job working for someone else.
Who is in your community?
I know I was concerned when I left my full-time post that I would lose my 'community', the people I mixed with every day. I felt they played an important role in my sense of being connected with the world. I was worried that I might be stuck at home alone and get very isolated.
Now I guess because of that concern, I've made a real effort to go to networking meetings and training events – and volunteer for things like Presentation Secrets – which has meant that the number of people I now know has grown massively.
And you know what? They are nearly all lovely people who are very ready and willing to offer ideas, support and encouragement when I need it. So in fact I feel much more connected and supported now than I ever did when I was working.
So what's the lesson?
People are much more willing to be 'on your side' and offer help than you may be giving them credit for. If you are locked into a job where the work is getting everyone down, this can sometimes push people into a place where they are more concerned with their own worries and are less willing and able to support others. But this is not a true reflection of how people usually behave.
If you turn your eyes outwards, away from the moaners in your place of work, you will find there is a whole world of friendly and supportive people out there just waiting for you to say 'please, could you give me a hand with this?' And when you just ask the question, the vast majority will say 'yes, of course – what help do you need?'
For career changers too...
This is a really important point to take on board if you are thinking of changing career or even just changing jobs. Don't try and go it alone. Seek support because it is out there if you just look. It is a really valuable use of your time to spend it networking, formally or informally so that you gradually build a group of people who you can turn to when you need help and encouragement.
And bear in mind that these people may not always be your family members! Make sure you connect with people who are willing to help rather than those who doubt you or who hold you back by telling you to be 'realistic'.
You know the saying 'It's not what you know, it's who you know'? Well I would adapt that slightly and say 'It's not what you know, it's who you get to know.'
It really is in your power to grow your network and to build a team of supporters around you.
So make it a priority to get out there and get connected
– it really will make a difference to how you are able to progress with your career, whatever direction you are hoping to go in.
