Remember This?

A blast from the past
- hope you enjoy it!

I was rummaging about in the attic recently - can’t quite remember what I was looking for now – when I stumbled across one of those cardboard tubes for storing pictures.

When I opened it, I discovered a stash of posters I had had on the wall of my student room when I was at University – rather a long time ago now!

So what did I discover?

  • A poster of Jimi Hendrix looking suitably wild in action on stage.
  • That famous shot of Steve McQueen on a motorbike.  You know - the one from the Great Escape.
  • A picture of Paul Newman and Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Paul Newman was my favourite.  Those stunning blue eyes!).

And then there was this...

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be critical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.
Be careful.
Strive to be happy.

Blast from the past

I don’t think I have read this since the late 1970s so it was lovely to stumble across it again.  I think I liked it then because it had a sort of hippy, flower-power feel to it – even though it was actually written in 1927.

Coming back to it after all those years, it feels like coming home.  It still rings true for me but with a much deeper resonance now I have a few more years under my belt!

Now, as then, it has a wonderfully calming influence on me as I read it so although I may not pin the poster on the wall, I will definitely print out a copy to refer to from time to time.

If you are struggling with the ‘noise and haste’ of day to day life and work, you’d be hard pressed to find something better than this to help you calm down and get things back into perspective again.

I hope it is a heart warming echo from the past for you too.

Or if it is new to you, that it will provide a quiet note of gentle inspiration to help you on your daily round.

Over to you
