Is There Another Way?

Business does not have to be brutal

I don’t know about you, but sometimes when I hear the stories that some of my clients tell about the organisations they work for I wonder how they (the organisations) can get it so wrong.

I hear examples of appalling management, rigid systems, unrealistic and uncaring demands made on staff.  Companies where all that matters is the financial bottom line and the staff are just treated like expendable ‘widgets’ to be cast aside when no longer needed. How can organisations survive when they adopt such a dog eat dog approach?

I guess in a depressed job market, they exploit the fact that their employees are afraid of losing their jobs and the company knows they can get away with practices that would have staff leaving in droves if there were more jobs around.

But the good news is that it doesn’t have to be that way.

I saw that glimmer of hope this week in the form of another inspirational video from Nic Askew.

Why don’t you stop now and take a look?

Grab a coffee, sit back and enjoy.

Hands up anyone who would you like to work for an organisation that thinks all their people are incredible.  Where the aim is to give everyone the freedom and support that will allow them to be more than they expected they could be.

My hand is up even as I type!

Too 'fluffy' for you?

You might think this is all very nice, but will they survive in the hard world of business?  Well it seems that the company, Graphik Dimensions,  have gone from strength to strength in spite of the recession and have also won awards for ‘best company to work for’.

Wouldn’t it be nice if company success was not just measured in turnover or dividends for shareholders, but also by this kind of measure of the quality of experience they offer to their employees?

What does this mean for you?

As I watched the video I thought there were some key messages that apply to us all and perhaps especially to you if you are teetering on the brink of making big changes in your working life.

How different would things be for you if you were to just take the following on board?

  • You are incredible.  If this company can believe in their staff like this, then you sure as heck should be believing this of yourself!
  • Are you willing to evolve and collaborate, so that you help everyone around you to be successful? It is not just about you, it is about how we can all be something bigger together.
  • Are you ready to ask big questions without worrying about how you are going to find the solution?  The answers will come as you travel the road.
  • Stop worrying about always getting it ‘right’ (there probably isn’t such a thing as ‘right’ anyway).  Be willing to explore.
  • Learn to be at peace with not knowing quite what you are doing or where you are going. Looking for absolute certainty is guaranteed to freeze you into immobility.
  • Let yourself be free from the stories of the past.  Hold them in awareness, but do not be defined by them.

The key themes that drive the organisation are Creativity, Consciousness, Community and Collaboration.

Seems to me that these are themes that would work just as well at a personal level.

Why not try them on for size?
