A Young Knight Makes Their Own Future

by Nicola Knight
(Snodland, Kent)

Hi, my name is Nicola Knight and I am a 22 year old with a big dream - and I am making it happen.

I left school at the age of 16 with a few GCSE's and not really a clue as to what I wanted to be when I grew up.

So I decided, as most young women do, to go and work in Retail until I decided what it was that I wanted to do. I worked in New Look for about a year and it was only when my legs felt like they were going to fall off I decided to try something else.

I did (as I'm sure a few do) scatter my CV around hundreds of companies in the local Bromley, Maidstone, Dartford area trying to find any work that included my skills, typing, office, talking, socialising etc. Still all very unplanned.

I was then contacted by a firm of solicitors based in Bromley that were recruiting young people and training them to become solicitors. I thought "great"!

But 3 years later, I was still no closer to becoming a solicitor, and I decided I was fed up with suing people and being screamed at by irate clients so I switched to a job as a personal assistant for a marketing company based in Dartford.

I did this for all of 3 months when the opportunity for a sales based role became available to me based on my personality I was offered the job. I took this and within a year I was the top sales person (and youngest) they had for a year. I was beginning to find my real strengths.

Unfortunately, this company were taken over by a much larger corporate company and I found myself spending more time on Excel spread sheets and less time with clients so I decided, based on the skills I had learned that I was ready to start my own business, Cogent PR and Marketing.

I did this in November 2010 with my business partner and we both have not looked back since! I am more confident, I have learned a lot about how a business works and how to treat staff and clients and I can honestly say this is the best career decision I have ever made!

It took me a while to find what was right for me, but now I feel like I have really found my niche.

Learning, growing and taking action
by: Cherry

Thank you so much for sharing your story, Nicola.

There must be many people out there who feel they are stumbling along in their career without a real sense of direction. Sounds a bit like that is how you started out!

What is so inspiring is seeing how the pieces gradually fell into place for you so you reached the point when you were ready to take control of your working life by setting up your own business.

And this at the tender age of 22!

I really admire the way you have learned from what you have done and have taken steps to move on when things were not working out for you in your earlier jobs.

I am sure your business will go from strength to strength. Good luck!

A role model for the young!
by: John Coupland

There's no where nearly enough PR for young entrepreneurs like you and your post is simply delightful!

With the current economic climate in mind, you have entered the market at a challenging time, however, you will thrive. Why? Simple! You have the right attitude and bring out the best in people.

Sure - like everything in life - there will be ups and downs. If things don't quite go the way you want them to, I've personally always found that there's a reason why not and for the best. Why am I telling you this? Well, sometimes running your own venture can be a lonely place but always remember your network - your support network. You're a giver, however never hesitate to ask for help either.

You also have an opportunity...an opportunity to inspire particularly those who are entering the world of commerce and finding their feet. I wouldn't be surprised if you're already doing this, but don't give up as the rewards will be so beneficial all round!

Wishing you continued success!
